Help! Pet Pekin Doing Weird Stuff!

Hi!

My daughter opened up the duck coop this morning, around 7:30, and gave them food and water, but she didn't break the ice on their "pond".

While hanging out laundry at 12:30, I heard one of the ducks coughing, so I went to check on them.

Out of water! Sometime between 7:30-12:30 the water in the waterer ran out. My daughter says that the waterer felt "heavy" when she put it out so they were not without water to drink the whole time, but couldn't completely submerge their heads...

I have a Black East Indian drake who has had a limp on and off for about a week, yesterday he was quieter than usual and he has a swollen abdomen, noticeable when watching him. Any ideas? Could the two things be connected?

Pale Chicken

A few weeks ago one of my ex-batts had sour crop. I managed to help her bring it all up and she was fine for about a week after. However, for about 2 weeks now, she has been all hunched over, lethargic and has lost most of the colour in her comb and face. She will pick at yogurt and food, but is no where near as enthusiastic as she was.

I've wormed them all, treated them with DM for mites, (they don't have them, but I'm always cautious as they've had them before), and they are not...

Layers mash?

Hi, I'm new here to the chicken chat ( :p ) but I wanted some help/advice please. I have one chicken (rescued from being necked for no reason) At the beginning of the month we had our first egg from her. There was nothing else for a long while. Last night she wasn't her usual self, she was quiet and lethargic. Same thing this morning. Usually she's shouting (cackling) for someone to let her out into the run, but there was nothing today. She was holding her wings very low, almost dragging...

Please can anyone help?? I am fairly new to chicken keeping and have just two little Pekins, they seem to be very happy and healthy, however, one of them, not sure which is regularly laying eggs with no shells. Most of the time, I just find a gooey mess inside their coop, but tonight, there was a perfectly formed egg, but just with no shell. What is happening?

They are fed on layers pellets and I also give them poultry grit. I haven't changed their feed, they also have corn...

Broody Chicken - How long?

Liz our Brahma hen has been broody for approx 3wks now. How much longer will this go on?

At first my OH persuaded me to let her sit on an egg but she squashed it, she has done this with every one she has laid. She has also taken to stealing the other hens eggs to sit on (& then break) & as I can't be checking every few mins we have had no eggs for ages now.

I have had to bathe her twice now as she was covered in old egg & her feathers were matting together. I have also scrubbed the...

Poorly Duck.

First of all hello to all the wildfowl lovers out there.

I'll try and keep this short.

We found a little baby duck (Danny Boy!) in our garden seven weeks ago. He has flourished and loves running around the garden and coming indoors. He has become part of the family. Four weeks ago I managed to rescue another Duck from a cat's mouth (We live in the country). This one was bleeding and near death. This Duck (Delilah) has recovered and is doing well.

The problem we are having is that...

Understanding Poultry Courses

Recently in the news, a group of animal liberationists used technology to infiltrate the farm of local poultry breeder in Dora Creek. With the aid of an unmanned drone, the group sought to capture on film the alleged violation of free range farming techniques by the farmer. Truly, the advocacy for free-range farming has reached a new level of espionage.

To pick up more information about proper poultry farming techniques, check out the poultry courses online. An individual may sign up for a...

Can anyone help me please?
My young Peking (about 18 weeks?) is listless, not really eating and hunched up.
She has been like this, on and off for a couple of weeks - at least. I have her indoors at night, again! She was indoors for a week and on antibiotics 1x daily...this helped and she started to pick up and even get a bit (not a lot!) feisty, when giving her her meds and eating well. But now only 3 days later we are back where we started. She weighs next to nothing and pecks a bit at...

I have a bantam hen with what looks like white powder over her face and comb. I tried to wipe it off with wet cotton wool but no luck.
It doesn't seem to bother her and the other hen and the cockerel with her haven't got any signs of it. Any ideas please ?

Sick 3-week old Khaki Campbell

I'm in need of some advice/guidance. We just bought our new Easter flock (10 chicks-mixed breeds, and 3 ducklings). They all came home without issues, but after letting the ducklings swim for 3 minutes in warm water, our 3-week old khaki started acting like he was drunk. Unable to stand upright, falling over to the side, erratic movements/twitching, limber neck. He has been eating and drinking well but does much better with support. There wasn't any trauma in the water. I dried him off well...

Sour crop in chicken

Visited a friend who keeps chickens yesterday, one of which was looking pretty poorly. The symptoms described sounded possibly like sour crop to me, with the hen regurgitating brown fluid and not eating, and generally looking unwell.

I suggested the owners look for signs of canker, as this can cause a sour crop in pigeons, and i'm fairly sure is transmittable to poultry. Just wondering what the likelihood it is canker, or else what else causes sour crop, and what can be done about it...

Chicken Health Question

I have a large coop with just 3 (large) chickens - sold as Burford Browns but not convinced...I'll pop a picture up at some point for you...someone might be able to identify breeds. They are fantastic layers and generally in pretty good health, however one of them has recently developed a very odd action in her head. Very difficult to explain but her head sort of tilts to one side and rotates slightly (we had a rabbit with a parasite in his brain some years back which had similar symptoms),...

Call Ducklings

Hi,
I have two 8 day old Call Ducklings , 1 has progressed very well, doubling in size, very energetic , vocalizing well, we think this one could be female due to her behavior.
However the second Call Duckling is very small in size , placid , lethargic, very rarely vocalizes, and allows the other Call Duckling to climb all over it , could this be because he is male and more calm due to genetic behavior ? also his legs and beak are paler in colour than its sibling is this due to colouring...

Help me please chicken experts!

Towards the end of last week Doris started getting quite lethargic. I separated her from the others and let her have the run of the veg patch & greenhouse - she never ate any of it! I fed her warm smushy pellets (which she ate on Friday) but she never touched a think on Saturday. I found her dead yesterday :(

However tonight Edna is also acting very lethargic! I've let them all out into the garden where they'll normally feast. The other 3 are grazing -...

Hi - I have 3 hens a RIR, a blackrock and a bluebelle. Approx 4 months ago all of them lost their bum feathers and looked very peculiar. The RIR grew hers back pretty quick then had a chest moult which also grew back quickly. The other have since suffered neck moults too but this has not grown back.

They are all wormed and mite treated, no sign of mite in the coop.

They are well nourished and have not stopped laying an egg a day each. They have access to grit with oyster shell.

How...

How large do purple guinea fowl get?

I'm considering order some purple guinea fowl to be "watchdogs" for my barnyard. They have other colors, like pearl and lavender. I'd like to know how big the purple ones get before I spend the money on the chicks and all the supplies. They have some other interesting varieties called white African, and pearl gray. The ones I want to get are called royal purple or just purple guinea fowl. They also have french and pearl guinea fowl for sale. I really don't know if they are different breeds...
